Peculiarities of regional varieties of the English language. Standard English variants and dialect.

Nowadays English has become a truly global language. There are only few places at the world map where English is not spoken. English is the mother tongue of people living in Great Britain, North America, and Australia. In South and Southeast Asia English has established itself as a link language between the indigenous languages. English is the official language or one of the official languages in many countries of the world. For example, in Nigeria English is used officially together with other languages: Edo, Efik, Idoma, Yoruba and others. English is also used for creative writing in countries where it is considered to be the second language. In many countries of Europe, China and Russia English is a first foreign language in school because it is considered to be the most important international language Relevance. Peculiarities of regional varieties and dialects of the English language is the most topical theme nowadays. The English language is today the world language.

. In many countries of the world English is one of the official languages or the first foreign language. It is a prestigious language in the sphere of education. More over, almost all intercultural contacts are held in the English language. The topicality of the English language can be explained by the fact that nowadays it is almost impossible to define all the variants and dialects of English. The object of study is English. The subject of the research is the dialects of the English language. The goal of the work is to study what regional dialects of the English language exist. Based on the goal, the following tasks were identified: 1. To research the World Englishes. 2. To research Standard English and Received Pronunciation. 3. To research main dialects of British English. 4. To research main dialects of American English. The study consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion and list of references.  

In the course of the study, we achieved our goal and reached the following conclusions: 1. World Englishes is a term for new localized or indigenized varieties of the English language, especially varieties that have developed in territories influenced by the United Kingdom or the United States. 2. Given the features of the social dialects of Great Britain, the so-called standard language is of particular interest to us. Most native speakers perceive received pronunciation as the pronunciation of educated people with a fairly high social position. Prestige RP, served to be defined as the standard language for education and television and radio broadcasting. Its synonyms include concepts such as Queen's English, Oxford English and BBC English. 3. Here are some dialects of the English language found today in England: Scouse, Geordie, East England, Birmingham, Cornwall, Cumberland, Central Cumberland. 4. North American English is a collective term for dialects of the United States and Canada. The United States does not have a specific “standard” accent in the same way that Britain received pronunciation. In Canada, there are three main dialectal areas: Western / Central Canada, coastal areas and Newfoundland. The most prominent and stigmatized US regional accents are the New York and Southern accents.
